Travel Wild Tours is a safari and climbing outfitter based in Nairobi, Kenya. The owner, Dunstan Miriti, was born in a town that sits at the foot of Mt. Kenya called Chogoria. Located 225 km (140 miles) northeast of Nairobi, Chogoria sits at an elevation of roughly 1500 m (5210’) and is situated almost directly on the equator. Dunstan is the fourth child of a simple farmer, and the grandson of Mr. Justo Kanampiu who was one of the founders of the Chogoria Hospital. The hospital is now located on land that was donated by his grandfather who was educated by the famous Scottish missionary Dr. Clive Irvine.
Dunstan was born in 1978 and attended primary school through 1992. Determined to finish his formal education, Dunstan proceeded to start a small-scale coffee farm that allowed him to afford to continue in school.
In 2000, Dunstan became a porter for tourists and climbers on Mt. Kenya near his hometown. It wasn’t long before he started to master the routes on the mountain and soon became an official guide. He would contract with different climbing outfitters from around East Africa and began to guide a wide-range of groups such as universities and colleges when he became confident that he could not only lead his own trips, but could do it better!
By 2004, Dunstan had established a name for himself and was beginning to attract clients from all over the world because of the great word-of-mouth recommendations his clients were giving to their friends and colleagues. It was then that he decided to form his own company, calling it “Travel Wild Tour’s” and expanded its offerings to include Mt. Kilimanjaro, safaris in Maasai Mara National Reserve and the greater Serengeti, as well as many other locations in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Today, Travel Wild Tours has become one of the leading safari and climbing outfitters in East Africa, and continues to receive high praise from those who have traveled with Dunstan and his team.
Travel Wild Tours is a full-service guiding and safari operation that welcomes clients of all experience levels. The company is licensed to guide on all of the major mountains and parks and has partnerships with many of the leading lodges and hotels in East Africa. For those clients who don’t have, or don’t want to pack, all of the necessary gear for extended backcountry excursions, Travel Wild can also provide a full range of items such as tents, sleeping bags, and even boots!
Exceptional service is what sets Dunstan and Travel Wild Tours apart from the other outfitters in the area. At no extra cost, a representative of the company meets every traveler or group at the airport upon their arrival and are gives a detailed briefing about traveling in East Africa. Very careful consideration is given when pairing travelers with the right guides and drivers, and all meals are discussed with highly trained cooks to make sure each traveler’s requirements are met. Most importantly, Dunstan stresses the importance of always being on time! He realizes that clients don’t intend to spend their time and money to stand around and wait when they travel; and if you have traveled in Africa before, you know that “being on time” is not always a priority!
Dunstan Miriti is married and has a son and a daughter. When not guiding or arranging trips, he carries on his family’s tradition of coffee farming and also raises cows, sheep, goats, pigs and chickens.
